道布森一生處於英國內戰中，經歷英國歷史最混亂卻最重要的期間之一，他身為查理一世的御用畫家，當查理一世最終卻遭國會以叛國罪送上斷頭台，迫使道布森面臨極度戲劇化與衝突感的人生；在國會接掌倫敦而皇室遷移牛津之際，道布森在此繪製數量驚人水準之上的肖像畫，對象包括保皇派贊助者、英雄和騎士等主題。而藝評家詹努茨薩克深信這是英國藝術首批代表作。誠如他於片中所強調的「鈔票應該要印製道布森肖像，而大眾更應該認識這位英國藝術先驅」。

影片將帶領觀眾逐步探索道布森不為人知的真實面貌，挖掘出他短暫具悲劇色彩的人生軼事。1646年，他死時身無分文、失業酗酒窮途潦倒，時年36歲。

片中亦專訪黛安娜王妃兄長，史賓賽伯爵，身為道布森粉絲，他由衷認為他是首位英國偉大畫家。
